What comes as the latest twist, an 18-year-old hacker from Oxford, Arion Kurtaj has received an indefinite hospital order after releasing clips of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Kurtaj, who is a member of the dangerous Lapsus$ cyber criminal group, was considered to be a high risk for society as a result of his unrelenting motivation to carry of more cybercrimes.
Kurtaj and his friends’ hacker campaign that affected Uber, Nvidia, and Rockstar Games and other firms has cost these businesses about $10m. Even with police protection, having his devices seized by Rockstar, Kurtaj was able to break into Rockstar’s security using an Amazon Firestick, his hotel television and a mobile phone. This achieved him a miraculous 90 clips of GTA 6, which he posted online and led to a massive media stir.
The court, which recognised that Kurtaj has severe autism, found that his abilities and desire to hack made him too risky to be set free. He will stay in a secure hospital indefinitely or until the doctors say he is not a threat anymore. Lapsus$, also referred to as the ‘digital bandits’, is assumed to comprise mainly adolescents who employed a combination of fraud and hacking techniques to illegally obtain valuable information from some of the world’s biggest corporations.
This case is not only about revealing the weakness of the most protected networks but also about concerns over a heightening malicious activity of computer literate youth. It is a situation that has seen experts in the cybersecurity tech working to determine the actual fallout even as the tech industry prepares for the worst.
