MIT's Drone Tech Earns Patent, Revolutionizes UAV Operations

Scientists at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Anna University Chennai have unveiled a new premier UAV technology which seeks the start of a new age in UAV operations. This innovation was patented recently by the Indian Patent Office and could be considered as one of the institute’s accomplishments.

This has been patented an intelligent autonomous landing system which is airborne-based mini-UAV system. The peculiarities of this system are that it successfully identifies the geographical coordinates of the object’s location and accurately sets the vehicle down in the given area of interest, especially in such difficult conditions as on the rocks. It is a useful tool during missions which involves determination of the most appropriate landing area because it employs a sequence of aerial images to come up with the right result.

Such progress is used to anticipate the large-scale, especially in locations where conventional landing techniques are unattainable. The systematic capability to do load drops, drops offs & picks ups in hostile or terrine conditions could change industries from logistics to disaster management.

The coordinator of the work S. Vijay Kumar noted that further development of this technology would help improve the speed and safety of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. “The ability of our system to perform navigation and landing of UAV in various environments without human interventions is a new frontier to UAV operations,” he said.

This innovation puts MIT in a vantage point in drone research and development thus boosting India’s status as an emerging technological hub.
