X Is Developing a Tool to Block Links in Replies to Cut Down on Spam

Now integrated into what used to be known as Twitter or X, a new feature is being rolled out in an attempt to get rid of spam: links in replies are not allowed. Reddit recently, thanks to an independent app researcher Nima Owji, highlighted a feature that lets users disable links in replies to their posts with a checkbox.

Owji who is popular for finding hidden features in many apps posted a screenshot of this upcoming tool and it has received a lot of attention. The tool is intended to save the audience from a huge amount of spam and rather deceptive links that appear in the comments section under popular posts.

At the same time, X’s Senior Director for Security Engineering Christopher Stanley claimed that the specified tool is indeed genuine, and its creation was performed by his team. The feature is believed to be simple to work with and is provisioned to have a checkable feature; ‘block links in the replies’, which should help keep the conversations on the platform less messy and less susceptible to scams.

This decision by X is made at this period when the platform is experiencing several transitions the most recent of which have been noticeable as they generated controversies. Nonetheless, this specific update will most probably receive a rather warm-meets-neutral reception from users that are irritated by lately observed spike in the amount of spam links in their exchanges.

Since extension has just recently gained the option to block links in replies, people will shortly be able to repost things without the possibility of spam to interfere with their conversations. This tool is highly commendable in as much as it serves as a step forward to improving the user encounter and making social media safer for all to enjoy.
